ENUGU — Troops of the 82 Division/Joint Task Force South East, Operation UDO KA, working alongside operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), have arrested a suspected commander of a kidnapping syndicate allegedly terrorising communities across parts of the South East and North Central regions.
The operation also led to the recovery of four AK-47 rifles, seven magazines and 133 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition concealed inside a forest hideout in Enugu State.
According to a statement issued on Monday, August 10, 2026, by Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations, 82 Division Nigerian Army, the suspect was arrested during a coordinated intelligence-driven operation around the Gariki General Area of Enugu State.
The military said the operation was launched following investigations into the abduction of two persons in Udi Local Government Area on August 2, 2026.
HOW THE MANHUNT UNFOLDEDThe breakthrough reportedly followed an earlier operation in which troops killed one alleged member of the kidnapping syndicate and arrested another suspect.
According to the Army, intelligence extracted from the arrested suspect provided investigators with information that helped identify the alleged syndicate commander and locate the group’s concealed weapons.
Armed with the intelligence, security operatives reportedly intensified their search and eventually tracked the alleged commander as he attempted to flee Enugu State.
He was subsequently intercepted and arrested.
The Army said preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect may be connected to several kidnapping operations across the South East and North Central regions.
CASH, WEAPONS AND AMMUNITION RECOVERED
During the arrest, security operatives reportedly recovered US$1,000 and ₦785,900, alongside other items described by the Army as incriminating.
But the operation did not end with the arrest.
Further intelligence gathered from the suspects allegedly led troops to Umuchingu Ujenike Forest, where the syndicate was believed to have hidden its weapons.A follow-up operation reportedly uncovered an arms cache containing:
– 4 AK-47 rifles
– 7 AK-47 magazines
– 133 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition
The discovery of the weapons could provide investigators with additional leads into the activities, operational structure and possible collaborators of the alleged criminal network.
MORE SUSPECTS, COLLABORATORS MAY BE TARGETED
The arrested suspect is currently undergoing further interrogation, according to the Army.
Security authorities say information obtained during questioning is expected to support additional operations aimed at identifying and apprehending other members of the alleged syndicate and individuals suspected of collaborating with them.
The latest operation underscores the increasing emphasis by security agencies on intelligence gathering and coordinated operations to dismantle kidnapping networks rather than merely responding to individual attacks after they occur.
The recovery of the weapons from a concealed forest location also highlights the challenge posed by remote areas allegedly being used by criminal groups as hideouts and weapons-storage points.
OPERATION UDO KA VOWS TO SUSTAIN PRESSURE
The Joint Task Force, Operation UDO KA, said it would continue working with other security agencies to sustain intelligence-led operations against criminal elements across the South East.
The task force vowed to pursue individuals threatening the safety of residents while seeking to create a secure environment for communities and economic activities across the region.
The Army’s latest announcement comes amid continued security concerns in parts of the South East, where kidnapping and other violent crimes have remained major concerns for residents, businesses and security authorities.
The military said the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of joint intelligence-led efforts in disrupting organised criminal networks, recovering illegally held weapons and denying criminal groups access to safe havens.
For now, investigators are expected to focus on what the arrested suspect may reveal about the wider network—including other suspected operatives, financiers, collaborators, hideouts and the origin and intended use of the recovered weapons.
