Businessman jailed 30 months for swindling woman

A Jos Magistrates’ Court on Monday sentenced a 49-year-old businessman, Abubakar Adams to 30 months imprisonment for swindling a woman  out of N240,000.

The Magistrate, Shawomi Bokkos, sentenced Adams, following his guilty plea.

Bokkos in her judgment, however, gave the convict an option to pay N50,000 as fine.

She also ordered the convict to N240,000 as compensation to the complainant.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported at the Area Command Police Station on Feb. 20, by Ms Maryann Ogbue ,the complainant.

Gokwat said the convict collected N240,000 from the the complainant to buy grains for her but immediately the money was transferred to his account, he switched off his phone and went into hiding.

During police investigation, he Gokwat said, Adams confessed that he  converted the money to his personal use.

The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provisions of the Section 174 of the Plateau Penal Code Law.
