IYC Slams ‘Political Orchestration’, Rallies Ijaw Nation Behind Sylva Amid EFCC Probe

by Paul Ebi

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Central Zone has called for unity among Ijaw people worldwide as political developments in Nigeria continue to spark concerns within the ethnic nationality.

The call comes amid renewed scrutiny of former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, who is currently under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged misappropriation of public funds.

In a statement on Friday, Chairman of the IYC Central Zone, Comrade Ineife Perekosufa, described the probe as “unfortunate, ill-timed, and raising serious suspicions.” He argued that Sylva, whom he referred to as an illustrious son of Ijaw land, had served Bayelsa State and the nation with distinction and did not deserve the controversies now surrounding his name.

Perekosufa highlighted Sylva’s contributions to Nigeria’s energy sector, particularly his role in the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He said the former minister’s track record should count in his favour, not subject him to what he termed harassment.

The IYC Chairman questioned the transparency of the ongoing investigation, noting the constant shifts in the allegations leveled against Sylva. He cited earlier rumours accusing the former minister of sponsoring a failed coup, followed by fresh claims of financial misappropriation, saying these inconsistencies cast doubt on the credibility of the case.

“The manner in which Sylva’s name has been presented to the public suggests an underlying political orchestration,” the statement asserted.

Perekosufa urged Ijaw people to remain vigilant and united, insisting that the community must ask critical questions about the motivations behind the probe, especially given Sylva’s claims of political persecution. He expressed worry over what he called a “growing and dangerous trend” of Ijaw leaders being used against one another for short-term political benefits.

He reaffirmed that the IYC Central Zone stands solidly behind Sylva and would do the same for any other Ijaw political figure facing similar circumstances. According to him, the council remains committed to defending the collective interests and dignity of the Ijaw nation.“We will not allow any form of victimization or divide-and-rule tactics to weaken our resolve,” he said.
