Former President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday reflected on his political journey, describing it as “a political miracle.”
Jonathan, who spoke while addressing an audience at an event in Abuja, said his rise from a humble background in the Niger Delta to the highest political office in Nigeria was something only divine providence could explain.
He recounted how he became deputy governor of Bayelsa State “almost by accident,” later governor, vice president, and eventually president — without any strong political godfather or prior ambition for such positions.
> “My political journey is nothing short of a miracle. I never planned to become a local government chairman, talk less of president,” Jonathan said. “Everything that happened in my political life was by the grace of God and the will of the people.”
The former president also emphasized the importance of peace, unity, and credible leadership in sustaining democracy, noting that “no nation can grow in the atmosphere of division and mistrust.”
Jonathan urged young Nigerians to believe in the nation’s potential and to pursue leadership guided by integrity and service rather than personal gain.
> “If my story can teach anything,” he added, “it is that with faith, humility, and service, God can take anyone anywhere.”
Jonathan, who governed Nigeria from 2010 to 2015, remains one of the country’s most talked-about democratic leaders and continues to play a prominent role in peacebuilding efforts across Africa.
