Kanu Slams NMA With Explosive ₦550m Lawsuit Over Alleged Forged Medical Report

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has instituted a ₦550 million lawsuit against the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), accusing the body of issuing a forged medical report about him.
Kanu’s lawyer, Barrister Maxwell Opara, disclosed the development, alleging that the medical document submitted to the Federal High Court was “fraudulently produced” and used in a manner that gravely undermined his client’s rights, health status, and public image.
According to Opara, the lawsuit seeks both declaratory and injunctive reliefs, as well as substantial damages, insisting that the purported forgery amounts to professional misconduct capable of jeopardising ongoing legal proceedings relating to Kanu’s detention and trial.He said the act raises “deep concerns about the ethical standards within the medical association,” especially given the sensitivity of medical reports used in court processes.
The NMA has not yet released an official response to the serious allegations.
Inside the Lawsuit: Massive Claims and Court Orders Sought
The writ filed at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, contains far-reaching claims and demands, including:
A declaration that the medical report dated 23rd September 2025, allegedly tendered before the Federal High Court in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CR/383/2015, is false and fabricated.
A declaration that the conduct of the defendants violates Kanu’s constitutional rights to dignity and fair hearing under Sections 34 and 36 of the 1999 Constitution.
An order directing the NMA and all defendants to withdraw and publicly retract the disputed medical report.
A perpetual injunction restraining the defendants from issuing or relying on any false or unverified medical report concerning Kanu.
A court-ordered independent medical examination by competent specialists with no affiliation to the defendants.
General damages of ₦50 billion for alleged injury to health, reputation, emotional trauma, and infringement of fundamental rights.
Exemplary damages of ₦500 million for alleged malicious fabrication and abuse of professional authority.
Legal and Public Repercussions
The lawsuit intensifies the already complex web of legal battles surrounding Kanu’s detention, health condition, and trial.It has also sparked renewed public scrutiny of medical ethics, justice administration, and the broader political undertones of Kanu’s case.
With no official reaction yet from the NMA, legal observers say the case could become one of the most controversial professional-misconduct suits filed against a major national body in recent years.
