In a move to promote accountability and fiscal discipline, President John Dramani Mahama has announced a ban on first-class travel for all government officials. This directive, part of broader efforts to curb unnecessary government spending, also includes restrictions on non-essential travel, with any necessary trips requiring approval from the Office of the Chief of Staff.
‘The resources you will be working with belong to the Ghanaian people,’ Mahama stated, emphasising the need for modesty and prudent resource management. This measure aims to reflect the government’s commitment to responsible leadership and respect for public funds, urging officials to focus on the nation’s pressing needs rather than personal luxury.
Fostering a culture of accountability
Mahama highlighted that accountability is not just about holding past leaders responsible but ensuring that current officials maintain the highest ethical standards. He vowed to implement strict oversight mechanisms, stating, ‘I will hold all my appointees to the strictest standards of accountability to ensure that the mandate and resources entrusted to us are used solely to improve the lives of Ghanaians.’

Reiterating the government’s mission, Mahama reminded his ministers that their duty is to uplift the people, not to indulge in personal gain. ‘There will be no room for arrogance and pomposity in this government,’ he declared, adding that officials must embody humility and serve as role models for the nation.
Combating corruption with strong measures
Mahama will receive the report of the Operation Recover All the Loot (ORAL) Committee, targeting corruption and financial mismanagement. He assured that appropriate actions would be taken against individuals who have undermined the country’s economic interests. Furthermore, a new code of conduct for government officials will soon be introduced to guide ethical behaviour and promote transparency.
This renewed focus on accountability, modesty, and respect signals a transformative era in Ghanaian governance, setting a precedent for ethical leadership and responsible public service.
