Omoyele Sowore, the renowned activist and publisher, has once again made headlines following a court ruling that granted him bail amid escalating tensions with Nigeria’s security apparatus. Speaking after the court proceedings, Sowore condemned what he described as a “criminal regime” and vowed not to be silenced.
“Another day, another charade by lawless DSS, but we will not capitulate to Mammon,” Sowore declared, insisting that public debate and scrutiny of governance cannot be halted, despite pressures from loyalists of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
During the hearing, attorneys representing Tinubu loyalists reportedly urged the judge to restrain Sowore from “inciting the public” against the government. Sowore responded firmly, asserting that holding public officials accountable and debating public policy is a civic duty.
The presiding judge noted that Sowore had consistently attended all court sessions, had his passport duly deposited with the court registry, and that there was no verified evidence suggesting that any statements he made posed a threat to national security. “Bail is a constitutional right, and once granted, it cannot be withdrawn on speculation or conjecture,” the judge stated, rejecting the prosecution’s call for stricter bail conditions.
While warning Sowore to conduct himself responsibly in public discourse, the court adjourned the matter to January 19, 2026.
Sowore also expressed gratitude to his supporters and reaffirmed his commitment to civic activism. “The government should know that whatever I am doing is to help them recognize where they have gone wrong and make improvements,” he said. “If they are doing well, we will praise them. All intimidation of activists must stop.”
In his characteristic bold style, Sowore took a swipe at the government’s administration, calling it “wasteful” and asserting that those in power “shake when you speak” and “feel jaded when you raise your voice.”
The activist concluded on a defiant note, praising fellow advocates and warning that Nigeria’s citizens will no longer be silenced. “You see that guy shaking? He knows 9ja don cast, but has no choice than to obey his superiors,” he said.
