Trump seeks deal with Russia, promises ‘harsh sanctions if unfulfilled
President of the United States Donald Trump has warned Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the ‘ridiculous war’ in Ukraine, or face high tariffs and further sanctions.
In a post on Truth Social, a social media platform owned by Trump, the former president criticised Putin directly, urging him to settle the conflict and stating that he is willing to impose heavy economic measures if a ceasefire agreement is not reached soon.
Trump, who assumed office as the 47th President of the United States on January 20, expressed a desire for a swift resolution to the ongoing conflict, asserting that lives must be saved. He referenced his close relationship with Putin and emphasised the urgency of making a deal to end the war.
“This is a situation that should have never arisen if I were President,” Trump said, warning that the conflict would only escalate without a resolution. “I love the Russian people, but this war must stop. It’s time to settle this ridiculous war! It’s only going to get worse.”
The Biden administration has already imposed numerous sanctions targeting Russian economic sectors, including oil and energy, in a bid to cut off funds used for the war.
Trump’s stance reflects a continuation of his efforts to urge peace and negotiations, highlighting his willingness to engage directly with Putin to bring an end to the conflict.
Trump has previously expressed confidence that he could resolve the Ukraine crisis within a day, suggesting that Putin would have refrained from military action had Trump been in office.
He reiterated his readiness to meet Putin anytime, expressing concern for the heavy losses sustained by both sides.
