Kaduna Man Nabbed for Stealing Phones in Church, Bags 15 Strokes of Cane

A Magistrates’ Court in Kaduna has sentenced a Narayi resident to 15 strokes of the cane after he pleaded guilty to stealing two mobile phones valued at ₦650,000 from a church.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, delivered the sentence on Thursday, warning the convict to desist from crime and stressing that the court would show no leniency if he reoffended. Emmanuel urged him to turn a new leaf and maintain good behaviour going forward.
According to the prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, the case was reported by one Richard Samuel of Christ Life Ministry, Kaduna. Samuel had left his Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and an Infinix handset charging inside the church on November 15 when they were stolen.
Leo told the court that the convict was apprehended shortly after the theft and handed over to the police at the Narayi Division.
The phones, valued at ₦650,000, were allegedly taken in violation of Section 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.
The convict, who admitted to the crime, begged the court for mercy before the sentence was pronounced.
