In a fiery intervention during a Senate debate on national insecurity on Wednesday, Senator Seriake Dickson, representing Bayelsa West, called on his colleagues to speak candidly to President Bola Tinubu about the worsening security situation in Nigeria, instead of offering patronising or politically correct remarks.
Dickson warned against “sugarcoating” the grim realities on the ground, insisting that it was the responsibility of legislators to reflect the true concerns of their constituents.

“For democracy to succeed, the legislative arm must rise to the responsibility of telling it as it is,” Dickson said. “It is not an attack on the presidency if we do this; it is proof that we are carrying out our legitimate duty of speaking the minds of the people.”
The Senator’s bold intervention has sparked widespread discussion online, with many Nigerians questioning the priorities of lawmakers. Social media users expressed frustration at the Senate’s conduct, noting that Dickson’s microphone was reportedly switched off as he spoke.
