“‘A Death Too Painful’ — Seriake Dickson Pays Tribute to Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpor”

By Paul Ebi

The state of Bayelsa has been plunged into mourning following the sudden passing of His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpor, Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, on December 11, 2025. The news was confirmed after a brief medical emergency, leaving colleagues, friends, and citizens in profound shock.

In a heartfelt statement, former Governor Seriake Dickson, who mentored Ewhrudjakpor from his days as a union activist, described the Deputy Governor as “a most selfless, dedicated, honest, and loyal public servant,” adding that Ewhrudjakpor’s death was “a loss not just to Bayelsa, but to all humanity that encountered him.”

Ewhrudjakpor’s political career spanned decades of service. He rose from being a personal aide and senior legislative aide under Dickson, to serving as Commissioner for Works for nearly eight years, where he oversaw landmark infrastructural projects across the state. He later represented Bayelsa West in the Senate before being nominated and elected as Deputy Governor.

Throughout his career, Ewhrudjakpor was celebrated for his unwavering loyalty and principled leadership, often putting service above personal gain. Dickson recounted how the Deputy Governor chose loyalty and integrity even when it came at a personal cost, demonstrating the rare combination of competence, intellect, and emotional stability that defined his life.

Beyond politics, Ewhrudjakpor was a devoted Catholic and Knight of the Church, a family man, and a lifelong advocate for service to God and humanity. His mentor emphasized that “he lived a simple life with profound impact,” leaving a void that would be difficult to fill in the hearts of Bayelsans, Nigerians, and all who knew him.

Condolences have poured in from across the state and the nation, reflecting the far-reaching influence of his life and work. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced soon in consultation with the government and the family.

Seriake Dickson urged all to pray for the repose of Ewhrudjakpor’s soul and for strength for his family, stating, “We must remain proud of his record of honest, dedicated, selfless, loyal and principled service to God and humanity to the very end. He will be sorely missed.”
