A heated national debate has erupted after activist and politician Omoyele Sowore strongly criticised what he described as “hypocritical and selective enforcement of Sharia law” in northern Nigeria. Sowore had condemned the death sentences and harsh penalties imposed on alleged blasphemy offenders, arguing that powerful political figures accused of corruption and aiding insecurity rarely face similar scrutiny.
In a statement that quickly went viral, Sowore said:
> “Godless politicians, judges, and police officers are sentencing people to death in the name of a God they themselves neither fear nor respect. We have yet to see any Sharia judge summon the courage to hold powerful figures accountable for alleged theft from the poor—or to prosecute the politicians who bankroll terrorists and destroy communities. In this country, the law is too often a weapon used against the weak.”
Calls for Balanced Justice
A number of commentators, including Islamic scholars and community leaders, acknowledged some of Sowore’s concerns, stressing that justice must never be selective.
One respondent wrote:
> “It is right to punish anyone truly guilty of immoral acts, but such justice must not target only the poor. Laws, including Sharia, lose credibility when the powerful are untouched. True justice is impartial—it should apply to all.”
Another commentator prayed for fairness in the justice system, stating:
> “Using the name of God for selective punishment is unjust and a sin. May Allah guide us to uphold the truth.”
Sharp Pushback From Northern Commentators
However, Sowore’s comments also triggered strong backlash, especially from some northern youths and religious defenders who accused him of meddling in religious matters and allegedly encouraging blasphemy.
Several respondents warned that blasphemy remains a “red line” in Islam:
> “We will not condone blasphemy. Advise people not to do it; it will only endanger their lives,” one commenter wrote.
Others argued that Sowore lacked adequate understanding of Islamic legal systems:
> “Study the rules of Islam before commenting. Sharia courts have their jurisdiction and blasphemy has serious consequences,” another user said.
Some comments were more extreme, calling for strict enforcement of blasphemy laws on anyone who crosses Islamic boundaries.
Escalating Online Tensions
As the online exchange intensified, some speakers responded with equally provocative counter-accusations against extremist interpretations of religion. These responses, though widely circulated, have raised concerns among observers about rapidly escalating sectarian rhetoric.
Analysts warn that the rising tension reflects the deep divide over the role of religion, politics, and justice in northern Nigeria—especially as blasphemy cases continue to draw global attention and spark public debate.
Ongoing Debate Over the Future of Sharia and Justice in Nigeria
Legal experts note that blasphemy remains a highly sensitive issue, and any public discussion around it often leads to friction between advocates of strict Sharia enforcement and those calling for human rights reforms.
Sowore, known for his activism and criticism of government institutions, has not issued further statements since the backlash, but supporters insist he raised legitimate questions about selective justice, corruption, and the impunity of political elites.
For now, Nigeria continues to grapple with a central question: Can justice—religious or secular—truly be fair when the powerful remain beyond its reach?
