Bayelsa:Suspected Boko Haram Member Arrested in Toru-Orua, Confesses He Was “Sent to Kill People”

A dramatic scene unfolded in Toru-Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, after residents apprehended a man alleged to be a member of Boko Haram. The community, located in the Tarakiri Kingdom and known as the hometown of former Bayelsa Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, was thrown into tension following the arrest.
In a video circulating online, the suspect is seen surrounded by residents, confessing that he was “sent to come kill people.” The development has triggered widespread concern across communities in the Niger Delta, with many calling for heightened vigilance amid growing insecurity nationwide.
Community member Austin Tunemi Otiri urged all Ijaw communities to remain alert, saying, “All Ijaw communities should be vigilant.” Social media reactions also reflected anger and frustration, with some questioning the wisdom of posting such security incidents online instead of immediately notifying authorities.
While some commenters expressed distrust in the formal justice system, security experts have cautioned against jungle justice, warning that it undermines rule of law and endangers innocent individuals.
Local security groups have since intensified surveillance around Sagbama and neighbouring communities as investigations continue. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the suspect or the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
Residents across Bayelsa and the broader Niger Delta have been advised to exercise caution, report suspicious movements, and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
