Ibadan, Nigeria – The recently concluded Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Elective National Convention in Ibadan has been described by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as a historic milestone for the party. The convention, which began yesterday and wrapped up early this morning, was hailed by the governor as a “moment of renewal and national turnaround” for the PDP.
Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde expressed profound gratitude to party leaders and members for ensuring its success. “This convention will go down in history as the convention that brought the turnaround to our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party nationally,” he said. He also underscored the PDP’s commitment to inclusivity and grassroots empowerment, declaring: “PDP… power to the people!”
The convention, widely regarded as a step toward consolidating party unity, elicited a spectrum of reactions from Nigerians:
Some praised the governor for his courage and leadership, with one commentator noting, “You are truly one of the greatest descendants of Ibadan warriors… posterity will forever be kind to you sir.”
Others raised skepticism about the legality of the process, citing the absence of INEC officials. One user commented, “Convention without INEC supervision… non and void.”
A few expressed amusement and cynicism over the gathering, with remarks ranging from comparing it to a “disco party” to joking about pre-Christmas celebrations.
Many acknowledged the peaceful conduct and organizational success, with one supporter stating, “Glory be to God that everything was peaceful and ended well without any accident. Once again, big congratulations.”
Despite the differing opinions, the PDP convention in Ibadan has already become a reference point in Nigerian politics, reinforcing Governor Makinde’s image as a leader willing to take bold steps to preserve party unity and empower grassroots participation.
