“Diplomatic Embarrassment Looms? Letter Urges Mexico to Reject Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s Envoy”

By Passman Akpos

A fresh diplomatic controversy has erupted after a strongly worded letter was sent to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, urging her government to reject the appointment of Nigerian political commentator and former presidential aide Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico.

The letter, authored by Valentine Obienyem, raises serious concerns about Omokri’s suitability for the diplomatic role and warns that accepting his credentials could potentially affect relations between Nigeria and Mexico.

Allegations of Instability and Political Contradictions

In the correspondence addressed to the Mexican presidency at the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City, Obienyem described Omokri as a controversial figure whose “publicly documented conduct and long-standing behaviour” makes him unfit to represent Nigeria on the international stage.

He alleged that Omokri has displayed “a pattern of instability and shifting loyalties,” claiming that the activist often prioritizes personal interests over principled political positions.

The letter particularly referenced Omokri’s activities during the 2023 Nigerian presidential election, when he was an outspoken critic of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

According to the writer, Omokri took part in protests and used social media platforms to question Tinubu’s health, academic credentials, and character—accusations that included claims about corruption and alleged past criminal activities.

Warning to Mexican Government

Obienyem cautioned the Mexican government to exercise “extreme caution” before accepting Omokri’s diplomatic credentials, arguing that his public record raises concerns about discretion, professionalism, and reliability—qualities considered essential for ambassadors.

The letter also suggested that Omokri has a tendency to ingratiate himself with powerful figures, warning that such behavior could lead to exaggerated or misleading information being presented to the host government.

Domestic Backlash Cited

The author further claimed that Omokri’s nomination has already sparked protests and criticism within Nigeria from civil society groups and commentators who question his suitability for diplomatic service.

Despite these objections, the Nigerian presidency allegedly moved forward with the nomination, fueling further debate about the selection.

Appeal Framed as Patriotism

Obienyem concluded the letter by stating that his intervention was motivated purely by patriotism and a desire to safeguard the integrity of diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Mexico.

Copies of the letter were also sent to Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico City, requesting scrutiny before any formal acceptance of the ambassadorial appointment.

Growing Political Debate

The development is expected to trigger further debate within Nigeria’s political space, especially given Omokri’s long history as a political commentator and former aide during the administration of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.

As of the time of reporting, neither the Nigerian government nor Mexican authorities have officially responded to the claims contained in the letter.
