Gowon Not Dead, Aide Dismisses Elder Statesman’s Death Rumour

By Paul Ebi

Reports claiming that former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), is dead have been described as false.

Adeyeye Ajayi, Personal Assistant to the former Nigerian leader, dismissed the circulating reports, stating clearly that Gowon is alive, in good health, and remains active.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Ajayi described the claims as “false and misleading,” warning that the spread of unverified information could cause unnecessary panic and distress among Nigerians and the international community.

“The reports making the rounds about the death of General Yakubu Gowon are completely untrue. He is alive, well, and in good spirits,” Ajayi said.

He urged Nigerians to disregard the rumours and rely only on credible and verified sources for information, particularly on sensitive issues concerning national figures.

The false reports had earlier gained traction on social media platforms, sparking concern and prompting widespread reactions before they were debunked.

General Gowon, who ruled Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, remains a respected elder statesman and continues to be involved in peacebuilding and humanitarian initiatives through the Yakubu Gowon Centre.

Ajayi reassured the public that there is no cause for alarm, emphasizing that the former Head of State continues his engagements as usual.
