Nnamdi Kanu Writes Trump, Seeks U.S. Inquiry into Alleged Genocide of Christians, Igbos in Nigeria

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has written a letter to United States President Donald Trump, urging him to initiate an independent international inquiry into what he described as “state-sponsored genocidal killings” of Christians and Igbo people in Nigeria’s South-East.
The letter, dated November 6, 2025, was reportedly delivered to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja. In it, Kanu—who remains in solitary confinement at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters—appealed to Trump to act on his recent statement that the United States was prepared to “act militarily and cut aid if Nigeria fails to protect its Christian population.”
Kanu called on the U.S. president to champion an investigation granting access to mass graves, military records, and eyewitness testimonies from survivors of alleged atrocities.
Quoting from the letter, Kanu wrote:
> “Your bold declaration on October 31, 2025, that the United States is prepared to act militarily and cut aid if Nigeria fails to protect its Christian population ignited hope in the hearts of millions who have been abandoned by the world.”
He alleged that Christians in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East, were facing an existential threat, adding that violence had expanded beyond the North into the “Igbo heartland, where Judeo-Christians are being systematically exterminated under the guise of counter-terrorism.”
Kanu cited several incidents, including the 2016 Nkpor and Aba killings, the 2017 Operation Python Dance raid on his home in Afaraukwu, and the 2020 Obigbo massacre, as evidence of what he described as a “hidden genocide.”
He referenced reports by Amnesty International, the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Executions, and local human rights group Intersociety, claiming that over 150 peaceful Christian worshippers were killed, their bodies allegedly dumped in rivers, while dozens were slain during worship at St. Edmund’s Catholic Church.
Kanu further claimed that children were executed for singing “Sweet Jesus”, accusing the Nigerian military—then under Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai—of overseeing these operations. He noted that Buratai’s later appointment as ambassador in 2021 granted him diplomatic immunity, shielding him from prosecution.
The IPOB leader recounted surviving four assassination attempts and his extraordinary rendition from Kenya on June 20, 2021—an act later ruled illegal by a Kenyan court. He reminded Trump that although Nigeria’s Court of Appeal discharged and acquitted him in October 2022, the government has refused to release him.
Kanu also cited the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, which described his detention as unlawful and politically motivated.In his appeal, Kanu called for:
1. A U.S.-led inquiry into massacres of Judeo-Christians in Eastern Nigeria.
2. Emergency congressional hearings on the alleged Igbo Christian genocide.
3. Magnitsky sanctions on Nigerian officials, including former Army Chief Tukur Buratai and former DSS Director-General Yusuf Bichi.
4. A UN-supervised referendum on self-determination for the Igbo people, which he described as “the only peaceful solution.”
Kanu urged Trump to use his influence, saying:
> “History will judge us by what we do when genocide knocks. You have the power to stop a second Rwanda in Africa. One tweet, one sanction, one inquiry could save millions.”
