In what appears to be a desperate attempt to disrupt national unity, the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has issued yet another divisive statement, urging Igbo youths to boycott the ongoing Nigerian Army 88 Regular Recruits Intake (RRI) exercise.
In a statement Director of Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu said the inflammatory message, seen as a last-ditch effort to destabilize the region, calls on the resilient youth of the South East to shun military recruitment efforts.
Nwachukwu reaffirmed the patriotic spirit of South Eastern youths, who have consistently met their quotas in various military, paramilitary, and civil service roles across federal ministries and agencies.
Despite IPOB’s baseless threats, the Army reported an encouraging turnout of applicants from the region for the 88 RRI.
Historically, youths from the South East have proudly filled their slots in prestigious institutions such as the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), and many serve as loyal and professional personnel in the Nigerian military.
The Army emphasized that these young men and women, unlike IPOB’s dissident elements, have pledged allegiance to the Nigerian state and continue to excel in service to their nation.
IPOB, described by the military as a group of terrorists responsible for the region’s economic decline, has become infamous for enforcing illegal sit-at-home orders, crippling businesses, and terrorizing citizens through kidnappings and violence.
Their latest statement is seen as a veiled threat, aimed at intimidating the very youths they claim to represent.
Nwachukwu condemned IPOB’s actions, calling them a destructive force responsible for exacerbating the suffering of the South East.
He urged Igbo youths to ignore IPOB’s propaganda, emphasizing that the Nigerian Army provides a platform for self-advancement, honour, and service to the nation.
The Army’s recent successes in combating IPOB’s militant factions are seen as evidence of the group’s dwindling influence.
The statement concludes by encouraging South Eastern youths to stay resolute and reject IPOB’s sabotage attempts, describing the group’s actions as “the last kicks of a dying man.
