MTN and Huawei trial Africa’s first 5.5G network in South Africa
IN a groundbreaking move, MTN South Africa, in collaboration with Huawei, has successfully conducted the continent’s first 5.5G network trial. The historic test took place at MTN’s Johannesburg headquarters and marks a significant leap forward in Africa’s digital transformation.
MTN, known for its leadership in 5G innovation, is now paving the way for 5.5G, a next-generation technology set to revolutionise internet connectivity across the continent. This trial has introduced a suite of cutting-edge features designed to dramatically enhance digital infrastructure, promising faster, smarter, and more efficient connectivity.
The 5.5G trial boasted impressive advancements, including 10-gigabit speeds, a significant boost in the capacity for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, ultra-low latency, energy-efficient networks, and enhanced autonomous systems that simplify network management.
In practical terms, this means users can experience internet speeds of up to 10 Gbps, a tenfold increase in IoT device capacity, and minimal lag times—all while using a fraction of the energy. MTN’s trial achieved download speeds of 8.6 Gbps, which is a major leap forward from current network capabilities.
The 5.5G technology brings futuristic applications closer to reality, such as 24K extended reality (XR), holographic meetings, high-speed fixed wireless access, and more robust private 5G networks for businesses. The trial was a joint effort between MTN and Huawei, who leveraged Huawei’s state-of-the-art antenna units, hybrid beamforming, and carrier aggregation technology. The 5.5G network operated across the C-band and millimetre-wave spectrum, which are key for delivering high-speed and high-capacity wireless networks
MTN’s Chief Technology Officer, Rami Farah, highlighted that the trial was not only a technical achievement but also a key step towards building a more connected future for South Africa.
