Gunmen shoot medical doctor, abduct five others in hospital

Gunmen on Wednesday attacked the Kankara General Hospital in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State and shot a medical doctor, identified as Murtala Dandashire, in the thigh.

A report by the The Punch said that Katsina State Police Command confirmed that another individual, whose identity had not been disclosed, was shot and injured in the attack.

Five other people were reportedly abducted by the gunmen before they fled the scene.

A banditry crisis analyst, Bakatsine, known on social media as @Dankatsina50, disclosed in a post on Wednesday that the attackers were members of the Boko Haram terrorist group.

According to @Dankatsina50, Dandashire, a native of Kankara Local Government, was the best graduating medical student of the class of 2019 from the Ahmadu Bello University Medical School in Zaria, Kaduna State.

He wrote, “Yesterday night, bandits stormed Kankara General Hospital in Kankara LGA of Katsina State; they shot Dr. Murtala Sale Dandashire and abducted five people in the hospital.

“There is a need to improve security in the hospitals across Katsina State. Within three months, bandits have reportedly entered three hospitals: Kurfi General Hospital, Mai Tsani Hospital in Dutsin-Ma LGA, and Kankara General Hospital.”

When contacted for a comment on Wednesday, the spokesperson for the state police command, Abubakar Aliyu, confirmed the attack on the hospital and stated that the police successfully prevented the situation from escalating further.

“Yes, the doctor and one other individual were shot during the incident. Our team quickly responded and prevented further escalation. Unfortunately, both individuals sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment. Additional details will be shared with you shortly.

Some Nigerians on X.com have urged the state government to enhance security measures to safeguard the lives of residents.

Abu Aisha wrote, “It’s unfortunate that the once peaceful Katsina State is now the den of kidnappers, thieves, and bandits.

“It shall not be well with all those who have hands in this banditry and kidnapping and those who have the opportunity to bring an end to this evil act but refuse to.

“Let the government and traditional leaders be playing. Insecurity has gone beyond in Nigeria. We must find a way to end it.”

“Gunmen have taken to attacking and kidnapping patients and even taking newborn children to the hospital. There’s a need for security in hospitals right now,” Lucky Ailemen added.
