Singer John Legend To Hold Move Afrika tour in Lagos

Global Citizen’s ambitious Move Afrika tour is set to captivate audiences in Lagos, Nigeria, on February 25, following the success of its first leg in Kigali, Rwanda. The initiative, which aims to support Africa’s creative industries and promote social impact, continues to make waves across the continent.

The Kigali concert, headlined by EGOT-winning artist John Legend, brought together local talents Bwiza and DJ TOXXYK, alongside innovative works from Rwandan designers and artisans. Performing in Rwanda for the first time, John Legend thrilled the sold-out crowd with hits like Ordinary Peopl’ and All of Me, while sporting stylish outfits created by local fashion houses.

Adding to the excitement, the event premiered Art Behind the Artist, a documentary showcasing the creative teams involved in the first edition of Move Afrika. The film emphasises the initiative’s mission to provide opportunities for artists and entrepreneurs across Africa, while highlighting the continent’s vibrant culture and talent.

Launched in 2023, Move Afrika aims to establish a pan-African touring circuit for international artists. This initiative not only brings world-class music to local audiences but also focuses on driving economic investment, developing infrastructure, and providing skill-building opportunities for local professionals.

This year’s Kigali concert saw 90 percent of the crew sourced locally, a notable increase from 75 percent in the previous year. Investments in technical production, security, event rigging, and creative showcases demonstrated Rwanda’s growing capabilities to host large-scale, world-class events.

Beyond music and entertainment, Move Afrika leverages its platform to advocate for stronger healthcare systems across Africa. At pre-show activations in Kigali and Lagos, Global Citizen has been urging African governments to increase domestic health financing, prioritise primary healthcare, and invest in health resilience. These campaigns are aimed at pushing for systemic improvements in healthcare access and infrastructure on the continent.

In Kigali, over 1,000 Rwandans participated in a health-focused day of action. Additionally, the Move Afrika Creative Fellows programme selected 15 aspiring filmmakers for masterclasses on storytelling, pitching, and filmmaking, offering a unique opportunity to develop their craft. One of the participants received funding to produce a short film focused on healthcare.

Thousands of free tickets were distributed to young people, particularly community health advocates and creatives, underscoring Move Afrika’s commitment to inclusivity and social impact. The tour aims to inspire the next generation of African leaders and changemakers, showcasing the power of art and culture to drive positive change.

Move Afrika has a track record of pushing boundaries, bringing together top-tier artists like Kendrick Lamar, Davido, and Usher in past editions. The initiative continues to unite music, economic growth, and social impact, creating a platform that empowers local talent while advocating for systemic change in healthcare and infrastructure.

By investing in Africa’s creative industries, Move Afrika aims to shine a spotlight on the continent’s diverse cultural heritage and highlight the potential for economic growth. The tour’s stop in  Lagos promises to be another powerful showcase of the intersection of music, culture, and positive social impact.

The Move Afrika tour is more than just a concert series—it is a movement that celebrates African creativity, advocates for improved healthcare, and drives economic progress. As the initiative continues to expand across the continent, it serves as a powerful reminder of the role of culture and community in shaping Africa’s future.
