Amnesty International demands probe into footballer’s killing by Nigerian Police

Amnesty International Nigeria has called on the Nigerian authorities to immediately and impartially investigate the killing of a footballer, Sani, by a police officer at New Market, Sabon Gari, Chanchaga Local Government Area of Niger State.

Sani was reportedly shot dead while sleeping at his friend’s tea stall.

According to witnesses, the police officers involved were heavily intoxicated and went on a shooting spree in the community.

Sani was buried earlier on Monday.

Amnesty International condemned the incident, highlighting the long-standing issue of human rights violations by Nigerian police during routine patrols.

These violations include extrajudicial executions, harassment, torture, and extortion.

“For decades, Nigerian police have targeted youth with blatant disregard for the rule of law,” Amnesty International stated.

“It is unacceptable that despite repeated promises of reform, the police continue to act with impunity, creating a climate of fear and corruption,” it added.

The organization has urged Nigerian authorities to ensure that those responsible are held accountable and that meaningful police reforms are implemented to prevent further abuses.
