“The harvest is ripe but the laborers are few” this is an account in the Holy Scripture; the reverse is the case in Nigeria. Here is the case of the laborer/job seekers are many but the employers/business owners are few.
The average mentality of the Nigerian student/youth is to gain admission, graduate with good grade and be gainfully employed in a good company with a fat salary and allowance.
The current state of Nigeria does not need job seekers but job creators. We already have too many people pursuing the few available jobs. This mentality of graduating and becoming a full time employee should change to graduating and becoming a full time employer of labor. Student should think of how they will create jobs for the Nigerian society and not how they will seek for good jobs.
How can a student who studied Agricultural Science in the university, graduated and pursuing for the few available jobs in the banking sector? Of all places! Banking sector! My brother, your field is already lucrative, there are different aspect you can venture into, that will make you creator of jobs and no seeker of job. Think of how you can feed Nigeria and not how Nigeria will feed you, please the spoon is in your hand.
Sorry I had to mention Agric, but that’s not the only sector, there are different other fields that are on the same position. The point I am trying to make here is that, the Nigerian youth must think outside the box, this will help you as an individual, the Government and the society.
Let me give an instance; we have one million students, out of these one million students five hundred of them are self employed and every one of these five hundred have the capacity to employ one person, among these people who is unemployed? The answer is, no one is unemployed.
Is good you graduate from school with good grade but it will be great if you come out of school to be an employer of labor. Am not talking about you employing many people, no! But at least one person.
People! The businesses available to employ you are few, the Government cannot employ everybody. Having first class and be jobless and penniless is a crime to society. The level of insecurity in the Nigeria state is high, because the high intellectuals are into the business of criminality, therefore police will always say “unknown gunmen” why will the gun men be known when their level of intellect supersede the Nigerian police.
The Nigerian universities on this note should produce graduate that supply first class jobs and not first class job seekers.
My dear student/youth, times have changed, things are getting tougher and tighter by the day, and your admission into the university should be a window of opportunities to more job creation and not an avenue of more job seekers.
