Activist Adeyanju Deji Slams Police Over Sowore’s Arrest, Calls Reason “Most Laughable”

By Passman Akpos

Human rights activist Adeyanju Deji has criticized the Nigeria Police Force over the recent arrest of journalist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, describing the reason for his detention as “the most laughable” he has encountered in nearly three decades of activism.

In a post shared on his official social media account on Thursday, Adeyanju wrote:

> “The reason given for the arrest of

YeleSowore is the most laughable I have ever heard in my 29 years of dealing with the ever lawless and shameless Nigerian police.”

Adeyanju, known for his outspoken criticism of government overreach and police misconduct, condemned what he described as a recurring pattern of intimidation against dissenting voices in Nigeria.

While details surrounding Sowore’s latest arrest remain unclear, reports suggest it may be connected to his role in organizing or commenting on recent protests against government policies.

This is not the first time Sowore, the publisher of Sahara Reporters and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, has clashed with security agencies. He has been repeatedly arrested since 2019 over activism and calls for political reform.

Civil society groups and human rights organizations have since called for Sowore’s immediate release, urging the government to respect the constitutional right to free expression and peaceful assembly.

As of press time, the Nigerian Police Force has not issued an official statement addressing Adeyanju’s remarks or providing further clarification on the circumstances surrounding Sowore’s detention.
