Allegations Emerge Over Human Rights Activist’s Work and Affiliations

A recent social media post by political commentator Lere Olayinka has sparked controversy over the roles and affiliations of Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, former Chairman of Nigeria’s National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
In the post, Olayinka alleged that Odinkalu, who currently works with the Open Society Justice Initiative, has ties to organizations promoting LGBTQ rights. He also referenced Odinkalu’s partner, Iheoma Obibi, noting her involvement in the adult products industry.
Odinkalu was appointed NHRC Chairman by former President Goodluck Jonathan. However, Olayinka accused him of later opposing Jonathan’s administration over its stance against the legalization of same-sex marriage in Nigeria.
As of press time, neither Odinkalu nor the Open Society Foundations has responded publicly to the claims. The Open Society Foundations, founded by financier George Soros, supports a wide range of programs on justice, governance, and human rights worldwide, including—but not limited to—LGBTQ advocacy.
Analysts say the controversy highlights ongoing tensions in Nigeria between conservative social values and global human rights advocacy.
