Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention Fuelling South-East Crisis — Ned Nwoko

By Passman Akpos

Abuja — Senator Ned Nwoko has called for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, describing his continued incarceration as unjust and the major cause of unrest in Nigeria’s South-East region.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, the lawmaker representing Delta North said that peace and development in the South-East would remain elusive until the Federal Government addresses Kanu’s case with fairness and transparency.

> “I believe Nnamdi Kanu has been held unjustly,” Nwoko said. “His incarceration is the main reason for the crisis in the South-East.”

Senator Nwoko urged the Federal Government to engage in dialogue rather than prolonged detention, arguing that genuine reconciliation would help restore calm and rebuild trust in the region.

He further emphasized that many of the socio-economic challenges facing the South-East — including insecurity and business decline — stem from the grievances surrounding Kanu’s continued detention.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021, facing charges bordering on treasonable felony and terrorism. Despite multiple court rulings granting him bail or discharging certain charges, the Federal Government has yet to release him, citing national security concerns.

The senator’s remarks have reignited debate about the government’s handling of Kanu’s case and its broader implications for peace and stability in the South-East.
