“Nigerians Debate: What Is the Name of President Tinubu’s Hometown?”

By Paul Ebi

A trending post on social media has sparked widespread curiosity among Nigerians about President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s roots in Lagos State.

The post, which reads, “I am a bit curious and I need a Nigerian or a Lagosian to satisfy my curiosity. Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is from Otuoke in Bayelsa State and he made the name of the community popular, especially when he was President. Our late President Muhammadu Buhari did the same with Daura in Katsina State. What is the name of the community of our current President Bola Tinubu in Lagos State? #trending #ekdelma”, has triggered a wave of conversations online.

While many Nigerians can easily identify Otuoke and Daura as synonymous with Jonathan and Buhari respectively, Tinubu’s exact hometown remains a subject of public debate. Though he is widely associated with Lagos Island — particularly the Iragbiji community in Osun State where he has claimed ancestral ties — others argue that his political and personal identity is firmly rooted in Lagos.

The post, now circulating across X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram, has prompted thousands of comments, with Lagosians offering different answers ranging from Ikoyi to Bourdillon, and even Shomolu.

Social commentators say the curiosity reflects how Nigerians often associate their leaders’ hometowns with legacy and identity.

As one user put it, “Every President has made their hometown famous. Maybe it’s time we find out exactly where Tinubu’s own story began.”
