Lagos Police Declare Sowore ‘Wanted’ Over Alleged Disturbance of Public Peace

By Passman Akpos

LAGOS, Nigeria — Human rights activist and convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has claimed that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, has declared him “wanted” for allegedly disturbing public peace in the Oworonsoki area of Lagos on Monday.

In a statement posted on social media, Sowore said the declaration stemmed from what he described as the police’s “inability to execute a ‘shoot on sight’ order” purportedly issued by the “illegal Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.”

> “The Lagos Police Commissioner, Moshood Jimoh, has reportedly declared me ‘wanted’ for ‘disturbance of public peace’, allegedly as a result of his officers’ inability to execute a ‘shoot on sight’ order given by his illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun in Oworonsoki today,” Sowore wrote.

The activist added that, despite several attempts to contact Commissioner Jimoh directly, his calls were ignored. He, however, maintained that he intends to meet with the commissioner in person to address the declaration.

> “Despite my repeated attempts to contact Nigeria Police Force Commissioner Jimoh, he has not taken my calls; nevertheless, I plan to meet with him soon to address his declaration,” he added, signing off with his movement’s slogan, #RevolutionNow.

The Lagos State Police Command has not yet issued an official response to Sowore’s claims. Efforts to reach police spokespersons for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

Sowore, a former presidential candidate and publisher of SaharaReporters, has had several confrontations with security agencies in recent years over his activism and anti-government campaigns.

The latest development adds to rising tensions between the authorities and civil rights activists amid ongoing nationwide debates over governance, police accountability, and freedom of expression.
