Defence Minister: No Soldier Will Be Punished Over Altercation With Wike

By Paul Ebi

The Minister of Defence, Mohammad Badaru Abubakar, has assured that no officer or soldier performing lawful duty will be punished over the recent altercation involving personnel of the Nigerian Army and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Badaru, who gave the assurance while addressing journalists in Abuja on Wednesday, emphasized that the military remains a disciplined institution that upholds professionalism and respects civil authority but will not tolerate the victimization of its personnel carrying out legitimate assignments.

He said, “No officer or soldier on lawful duty will be punished as a result of the incident. The Nigerian Armed Forces operate under strict rules of engagement and code of conduct, and we expect the same respect from other agencies of government.”

The minister added that the Defence Headquarters had commenced a review of the incident to ensure that future interactions between military personnel and civilian authorities remain respectful and properly coordinated.

The confrontation between Wike and a naval officer at a checkpoint in Abuja on Tuesday has generated widespread public debate, with many Nigerians calling for restraint, respect for institutional boundaries, and accountability from public officials.

Badaru reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to inter-agency harmony, noting that the armed forces will continue to play their constitutional role of protecting lives and property without fear or favour.

“Our men are out there day and night, ensuring peace and security across the nation. They deserve respect, not intimidation,” he said.
