“Outrage Erupts as Nigeria’s War Hero Air Commodore Balogun Watches His Home Bulldozed”

By Passman Akpos

A wave of anger and sympathy has swept across Nigeria following the demolition of the property belonging to Air Commodore Abayomi Balogun (Rtd), a decorated Nigerian Air Force fighter pilot renowned for his courage during the Liberian and Sierra Leone civil wars.

Balogun, celebrated for flying some of the most dangerous combat missions in West Africa’s peacekeeping history, earned national and international respect for his unwavering bravery. Despite retiring from active service, he has remained deeply involved in national development—most notably through the Green Heroes Foundation, where he provides therapy, rehabilitation, and support for veterans battling Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

He is also the author of the strategic publication, “Amidst the Chaos and Other Certainties: Nigeria Can Overcome,” a book offering strong security insights and advocating greater synergy among Nigeria’s security agencies in the fight against crime, terrorism, and national insecurity.

Demolition Sparks Public Outcry

The recent demolition of his home has triggered widespread outrage, with many Nigerians condemning the treatment of a man widely regarded as a national hero. Videos circulating online show the retired officer sitting helplessly beside the rubble of his home, prompting emotional reactions nationwide.

Several Nigerians expressed deep disappointment:

“Nigeria always forgets the heroic efforts of our able men after retirement.”

“No be this man wey Wike destroys him building for Abuja? As a One-Star General Rtd, he shouldn’t have been treated like this.”

“This is very disheartening. The Defence Headquarters and the Nigerian Air Force should intervene immediately.”

“Men and women who staked their lives for peace should be respected. Nigeria has a very negative way of saying ‘thank you.’”

Others insisted that regardless of any alleged violation regarding the property, Balogun deserves compensation given his contributions to national and regional stability.

One eyewitness wrote:“The whole compound was grounded like it was hit by an airstrike. This is unacceptable. He must be restored with a solid home to motivate those still serving.”

Another lamented:“Instead of the government to build a resort to honour him, his little parcel of land was destroyed and looted. This is wickedness against a man who gave his all for Nigeria.”

Calls for Government Action

There are growing calls for the Defence Headquarters, the Nigerian Air Force, and the Federal Government to intervene, with many insisting that Balogun’s sacrifice demands respect, protection, and national recognition—not humiliation.

As the controversy continues to unfold, Nigerians across social and political divides are united in one sentiment: a nation must honour those who risk their lives for its peace and security.
