“Governor Okpebholo Draws Line in Sand: Tinubu Must Win Edo or I Quit!”

By Passman Akpos

In a bold and uncompromising declaration, Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has vowed to resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to secure victory in Edo during the 2027 presidential election.

The governor made the announcement during an exclusive sit-down with veteran journalist Babajide Otitoju, insisting that the political landscape in Edo has decisively swung in Tinubu’s favour.

“Asiwaju [Tinubu] is even more popular than me here now because Edo people already know that what I’m doing is because of Asiwaju’s impact,” Governor Okpebholo said. “Everybody is for Asiwaju here.”

When Otitoju suggested that supporters of former Governor Godwin Obaseki might mount a challenge for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027, Okpebholo dismissed the idea outright.

“Who? Obaseki… Let him come. I bet with you,” the governor said, even extending his pinky finger in jest to seal the challenge. He further argued that Obaseki’s record would prevent any political comeback, stating, “You cannot scam Edo and come back here. No mother on the street will pray for Obaseki.”

Governor Okpebholo also brushed aside the Labour Party’s previous electoral gains in Edo, describing them as irrelevant to the current political climate. He credited President Tinubu for infrastructural projects across the state, including Sapele Road and the Adesuwa flyover, which he said had earned the enduring gratitude of Edo residents.

“If Asiwaju does not win here, I will resign as governor. I am telling you. I am the one telling you,” Okpebholo emphasized, reaffirming his unwavering commitment to the APC’s fortunes in Edo.

Describing himself as a student of the late Chief Tony Anenih, Governor Okpebholo framed his political approach as one rooted in grassroots engagement rather than elitism or thuggery. “You don’t see me with elites; you see me with ordinary people on the streets,” he said.

With his audacious pledge, Governor Okpebholo has set the stage for what promises to be a high-stakes political battle in Edo State ahead of the 2027 elections.
