“Tinubu’s Tax Tsunami: High-Powered Committee Set to Shake Nigeria’s Fiscal System”

By Passman Akpos

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a high-powered National Tax Policy Implementation Committee (NTPIC), signalling a major push toward coordinated execution of his administration’s sweeping tax reforms.

The committee, chaired by renowned financial expert Joseph Tegbe, is mandated to drive the full implementation of the new Tax Acts in line with the government’s economic transformation agenda. The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, will provide ministerial oversight.

According to a State House statement issued by Presidential Adviser Bayo Onanuga on Friday, the NTPIC is expected to “ensure coherent, effective, and well-aligned implementation across all levels of government,” while safeguarding investor confidence and the interests of citizens.

Experts, Reformers, and Policy Veterans Drafted In

Tegbe, a Fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation, brings more than 35 years of professional experience from both public and private sectors, including his stint as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa.

He will be supported by Mrs Sanyade Okoli, Special Adviser to the President on Finance and Economy, who will serve as Committee Secretary. Other members include policy strategist Ismaeel Ahmed, development consultant Rukaiya El-Rufai, and a diverse team of experts across finance, law, tax administration, civil society, and the private sector.

A Reform Built on Consultation and Inter-Agency Synergy

The NTPIC has been tasked with broad stakeholder engagement—consulting private sector operators, professional bodies, subnational governments, and the public. It will also mount nationwide awareness campaigns to aid the smooth rollout of the new tax laws.

Its mandate includes harmonising existing frameworks with the new statutes, coordinating revenue-generating institutions, and ensuring unified oversight and reporting throughout the transition period.

President Tinubu described effective implementation as “central to strengthening public finance management and supporting the nation’s economic aspirations.”

He added that the new tax laws reflect his administration’s commitment to a fair, transparent, technology-driven tax system that boosts economic growth.

Committee Pledges Diligence; Edun Says Fiscal System Set for Overhaul

In his remarks, Tegbe assured Nigerians of the committee’s readiness to deliver:

> “We understand the strategic importance of these Tax Acts. We will work closely with all stakeholders to support the Minister of Finance in ensuring seamless implementation and building public trust in the tax system.”

Finance Minister Wale Edun described the committee’s creation as a decisive move by the President to reset Nigeria’s entire fiscal policy framework.

> “Mr President has not only set the direction but also provided the authority and support required to deliver significant economic growth for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he stated.

Boosting Revenue, Blocking Leakages

The NTPIC is expected to enhance revenue mobilisation, minimise leakages, and reinforce accountability—key conditions for stabilising public finances and advancing national development.

The committee begins work immediately.
