Senate Set for Crucial Wednesday Screening of Defence Minister Nominee, Gen. C.G. Musa

By Passman Akpos

The Nigerian Senate will today begin the screening of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s nominee for Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (rtd), in what lawmakers describe as a high-priority national assignment.

This follows an official statement from the Office of the Senate Majority Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, confirming that the Upper Chamber has formally received President Tinubu’s request for Musa’s confirmation.

According to Bamidele, the President’s letter will be read during Wednesday’s plenary session, after which the chamber will immediately commence the screening process.

He stressed that the Senate cannot afford to delay such a critical appointment, especially given the country’s ongoing security challenges.

> “This is a matter that touches the core interest of our nation. At a time like this, we must move with speed and responsibility,” Bamidele said.

General Musa, a former Chief of Defence Staff and a respected military strategist, is expected to face intense scrutiny from lawmakers who are under pressure from the public to ensure Nigeria’s next Defence Minister possesses the competence, experience, and clarity needed to confront nationwide insecurity.

Wednesday’s screening is expected to draw significant national attention as Nigerians watch closely to see how the retired General addresses questions on insurgency, banditry, terrorism, military reform, and Nigeria’s defence doctrine going forward.
