Sowore Heads Back to Court, Accuses FG, IGP Egbetokun of “Year-Long Witch-Hunt”

By Passman Akpos

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore says he will again appear before the Federal High Court in Abuja today, continuing what he describes as a “year-long battle against an illegal abuse of power” arising from his challenge to the appointment of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Sowore alleged that since January 2025, the police under IGP Egbetokun — whose appointment he insists is unconstitutional — have used the courts to “harass and intimidate” him, including efforts to confiscate his international passport under the guise of bail conditions.

The matter is before Justice Musa Suleiman Liman of the Federal High Court, whom Sowore accused of repeatedly stalling proceedings.

According to him, the judicial process has been “riddled with delay tactics, absenteeism, and bad-faith adjournments,” all aimed at preventing the return of his passport. Sowore described one episode in which he was asked to provide proof that he had a wife and children in the United States, calling the request “extraordinary, arbitrary, and invasive.”

He added that the confrontation with the police leadership—driven, in his words, by the “illegally appointed Egbetokun”—has been a predictable escalation of his constitutional challenge, which he says has grown into a broader struggle for justice and accountability.

“From the very beginning, I knew this would be a long, consequential fight,” he said. “But it has also been a year of resistance, progress, and steady movement toward liberation.”

Sowore vowed to continue attending court sessions despite the obstacles, declaring he remains “undaunted, unbroken, and resolute” as the legal battle enters another phase today.
