Abuja Has Become the Capital of Iniquity and Corruption — Inibehe Effiong

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has described Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, as “a capital of iniquity and corruption,” where, according to him, even well-intentioned individuals are easily compromised by the system.
Effiong made the assertion on Friday during an interview on The Morning Brief, a programme on Channels Television, where he discussed the state of governance and the moral challenges facing Nigeria’s political elite.
According to Effiong, Abuja, which was envisioned as a center of unity and administrative excellence, has instead become “a place where values are eroded and public officials quickly lose their integrity.”
> “Abuja is not just the seat of power; it has become the capital of iniquity and corruption. Many good people come to Abuja and get compromised. The system swallows them,” he said.
The outspoken lawyer, known for his strong advocacy for accountability and justice, lamented what he described as the “moral decay” within Nigeria’s corridors of power. He argued that the pervasive corruption and impunity in the capital reflect a deeper national problem that requires urgent reform.
Effiong also emphasized the need for citizens to demand transparency and uphold ethical standards, warning that unless the culture of compromise is challenged, “Nigeria will continue to suffer from leadership failure.”
His remarks have sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing agreement over what they see as a truthful depiction of the nation’s capital, while others criticized the statement as an unfair generalization.
