Akwa Ibom 2027: Akpabio Declares Senatorial Consultation, Sparks Mixed Reactions Online

By Passman Akpos

A new political conversation has emerged in Akwa Ibom North West following the official launch of a senatorial consultation by social media personality and content creator, Pat Akpabio, ahead of the 2027 general elections

In a statement circulated on social media platforms, Akpabio announced her intention to consult widely across the district, unveiling the slogan “Voice of the People (Uyio Idung)” as the central theme of her political movement. She described her mission as a commitment to grassroots-driven leadership, promising to take the “needs, struggles, and hopes of Akwa Ibom North West from the grassroots to the Senate floor.”

According to her declaration, the consultation is anchored on what she termed “Leadership that Listens, Representation that Delivers.” She called on residents of the senatorial district to join the movement, stressing that their voices and future matter in shaping the political direction of the constituency.

The announcement, however, has generated intense debate and sharp reactions online, with supporters and critics expressing divergent views about the seriousness, structure, and viability of the ambition.

Some social media users questioned the political platform on which Akpabio intends to run, with speculation ranging from an independent candidacy to claims that she may contest from abroad. Others alleged she is linked to a little-known political platform referred to by commenters as the “Obot Emana Party,” though no official confirmation has been made.

Several commentators dismissed the move as a “social media stunt,” arguing that the Akwa Ibom North West senatorial seat is firmly controlled by established political heavyweights. Some users openly reaffirmed their loyalty to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, insisting there is “no vacancy” and describing him as a “big name” with no credible opposition at the moment.

“This is just for online chaos,” one commenter wrote, while another said, “A social media senator may not get up to three votes.” Others questioned why key questions raised on her platforms remain unanswered.

Conversely, a few voices defended her right to political ambition, noting that Nigeria’s democracy allows any qualified citizen to contest, regardless of background or public perception. They argued that consultations are a legitimate first step in gauging public support. As of the time of filing this report, Pat Akpabio has not officially announced a political party, nor clarified claims surrounding her location, funding, or campaign structure.

With the 2027 elections still some distance away, political observers say the declaration signals the early onset of senatorial jostling in Akwa Ibom North West, a district known for intense political loyalty and high-stakes contests.

Whether the consultation evolves into a full-fledged candidacy or fades amid public skepticism remains to be seen. For now, it has succeeded in one key area—drawing attention and igniting debate across the state’s political and social media space.
