Bayelsa Guber Poll: Ikiogha dumps LP, join forces with Diri

By Peregba Jerry
Barely two weeks before the Bayelsa State gubernatorial election, Dikivie Ikiogha, a political associate of former President Goodluck Jonathan, has voiced his conviction that only Governor Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stands a chance of winning the forthcoming poll.
Ikiogha, a former Chief of Staff to former Governor Seriake Dickson, conveyed this view during a news conference held in Yenagoa, the state capital, in anticipation of his formal defection and that of his supporters to the PDP on Tuesday, October 31.
He highlighted his previous involvement in the 2014 governorship election as an aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC) and his support for David Lyon in the 2019 election, which ended with Lyon’s victory being overturned.
The former commissioner for Agriculture, who has dumped the Labour Party for the PDP, contended that the APC cannot win the forthcoming election because of its choice of candidate.
He stated: “APC might not win the state governorship election because of the choice of candidate of the party. Labour Party is factionalized at both national and state level and by so doing they have no chance in the election.
“I and my teeming supporters have decided to support the PDP because it’s the only party that is organised that can win the election. I declared my total support for Governor Douye Diri and all my supporters. All my supporters both in APC and LP are fully behind him. We are moving fully to PDP come October 31, 2023.
“My interest is the overall development of the state which Governor Diri in this first tenure has really tried and he has also promised to improve on other areas once re-elected.
“The main purpose of creating the state is for development. And I am ready to support whosoever will develop the state. Since Diri came onboard, the state has been enjoying security and it’s by this we can witness the type of development we want to see.”
Reacting to why he had been moving from one party to another, Ikiogha added: “I am a politician, but one who is serious after the development of Bayelsa State especially Yenagoa the state capital.
