Bayelsa: NEW Associates’ Reigneth Awudumu released on bail amid political tensions

New Associates, a pro-Wike group, confirmed that Reigneth Awudumu, its Bayelsa State Chapter’s Director of New Media, has been granted bail days after her arrest by alleged supporters of Governor Douye Diri.
The group praised her unwavering strength in the face of what they described as political persecution.
Reigneth’s arrest last week was reportedly tied to her involvement in a pro-Wike rally in Bayelsa. Kelvin Loveday-Egbo, Media Assistant to Barr. George Turnah, the group’s State Convener and PDP Caretaker Committee Chairman, expressed relief at her regained freedom.
The statement read: “Reigneth Awudumu faced unjust detention and charges in a Yenagoa magistrate court, stemming from a petition allegedly orchestrated by John Sambo, an aide to Governor Diri. Her resilience against the administration’s oppressive tactics is truly inspiring.
“We applaud Chief Magistrate Obiri Baitimizimo for her courageous commitment to justice, upholding the Bayelsa Judiciary’s integrity despite external pressures.
Granting bail on fair terms highlights the judiciary’s vital role in defending democratic principles.
“We extend gratitude to the defense team—Precious Afrikanus Esq, Matthew Opokumo Esq, and Samuel Agbura Esq—for their dedicated efforts. Barr. George Turnah will lead the defense at the next court date.
“As we celebrate Reigneth’s release, we urge Governor Diri to prioritize addressing critical issues like insecurity over targeting political opponents. NEW Associates remains steadfast in its commitment to justice, equality, and a hopeful future for all Bayelsans.”
