“Bayelsa Takes to the Skies: Maiden State-Owned Flight Lands in History!”

YENAGOA, Bayelsa State — A historic moment unfolded today as Bayelsa State officially launched its first state-owned commercial aircraft, marking a new era for transportation and economic development in the region. The aircraft touched down at Bayelsa International Airport, Yenagoa, on its maiden flight from Abuja.
Governor Douye Diri, who was on board the inaugural flight, was joined by the Honourable Minister of State Petroleum (Oil), Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, Ph.D., Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, members of the National Assembly and State House of Assembly from Bayelsa, elder statesmen, and other top government officials.
Speaking at a brief ceremony following the landing, Governor Diri emphasized the state’s commitment to boosting economic growth through enhanced connectivity. “We are intentional about the economic development of our dear state, and a daily flight operation to enhance movement into and out of Yenagoa, the state capital, will now be sustained,” he said.
The aircraft will be managed by Pioneer Airlines, led by Captain Henry Ungbuku, a seasoned aviation professional and a native son of Bayelsa. The state leadership also announced that the aircraft will operate under a Bayelsa-branded name, with “Air Bayelsa” and “Bayelsa Air” currently under consideration. The final name will be confirmed after consultations with the relevant agencies.
Governor Diri congratulated Bayelsans on the milestone, declaring it a shared achievement for the state. “Congratulations to all Bayelsans! This is a step forward in our journey toward progress and regional integration,” he added.
The launch of the state-owned aircraft signals Bayelsa’s strategic push to enhance transport infrastructure, promote tourism, and create a ripple effect on the state’s economy.
