APC Faces Backlash Over Past Actions as Critics Recall U.S. Involvement in Jonathan’s Ouster

By Passman Akpos

A fresh wave of criticism has trailed the All Progressives Congress (APC) following renewed concerns about foreign interference in Nigeria’s affairs, as critics recall how the ruling party once sought international backing against former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Commenting on the matter, a political commentator known as Mr. Common Sense accused the APC of hypocrisy, reminding Nigerians of the period when some APC governors reportedly visited the United States to lobby for support against President Jonathan during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency.

“The moment APC Governors went to the U.S. to report President Goodluck Jonathan to the U.S. Government and inevitably invited the U.S. to help them remove Jonathan as President—this was in the heat of Boko Haram insurgency,” he said.

He noted that it was ironic that the same party now expresses outrage over alleged U.S. interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.

“Today, the same APC is crying that the country they once worked with to oust a legitimate President now wants to undo what they have done. What goes around comes around,” he remarked.

Mr. Common Sense emphasized that while he does not support any form of foreign interference in Nigeria’s sovereignty, the APC should accept responsibility for its past actions rather than “cry foul.”

“My education forbids me to applaud whatever the U.S. may want to do, but the APC and their supporters should keep quiet and stop crying foul. Bunch of hypocrites,” he added.

The statement has since sparked widespread debate on social media, with many Nigerians revisiting the political maneuvers of the 2015 elections and the role international actors allegedly played in Nigeria’s leadership transition.
