Canada cuts down foreign workers intake, prioritises citizens
Canadian government has announced plans to overhaul its labour market by reducing its reliance on temporary foreign workers (TFWs) and investing in Canadian citizens.
Tarakirivoice reports that the move reverses the expansion of the TFW program in 2022, which aimed to fill one million vacant positions.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted, “We’re reducing the number of low-wage, temporary foreign workers in Canada. The labour market has changed. Now is the time for our businesses to invest in Canadian workers and youth.”
The Ministry of Employment, ESDC, stated that the TFW program was intended to be used only when qualified Canadians and permanent residents couldn’t fill job vacancies. However, the program has been used to circumvent hiring talented workers in Canada.
Under the new changes, employers will be limited to hiring no more than 10% of their workforce through the TFW program, with exceptions for seasonal and non-seasonal jobs in food security sectors, healthcare, and construction.
The maximum duration of employment for workers hired through the low-wage stream will also be reduced to one year from two.
Minister of Employment Randy Boissonnault said, “The Temporary Foreign Worker program was designed to address labour market shortages when qualified Canadians were not able to fill those roles. Right now, we know that there are more Canadians qualified to fill open positions.”
