Coca-Cola invests $50m in high-tech Namibia bottling line

Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) has announced a significant investment of $50 million in its Namibian operations, launching a state-of-the-art bottling line capable of producing 27,000 bottles per hour. This new line will boost the plant’s output capacity by 30 percent, positioning Namibia as a key regional hub in Coca-Cola’s production and distribution network.

The high-speed bottling line is a major upgrade for Coca-Cola’s Namibian plant, expanding not only production but also strengthening the local economy. ‘We’ve ensured that this production line goes beyond output numbers,’ explained Pottie de Bruyn, General Manager of CCBA Namibia. ‘It’s about creating shared opportunities across the value chain. The increased production also supports local businesses that supply us with raw materials and services.’

By enhancing local sourcing and business partnerships, CCBA aims to boost local enterprise, creating growth throughout its Namibian value chain and providing more business for suppliers.

A crucial aspect of this investment is the introduction of a water treatment plant with cutting-edge water recovery technology, designed to significantly reduce water consumption. This eco-friendly upgrade reflects Coca-Cola’s commitment to sustainable practices and resource conservation in its operations.

In addition to environmental benefits, CCBA’s new investment also includes skills training in advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, for employees. This training not only equips staff to manage the new line but also contributes to the development of a ‘future-ready’ workforce in Namibia. CCBA hopes that the upskilled workforce will support the business’s digital transformation and position Namibia as a leading centre of excellence in beverage production.

Sunil Gupta, Chief Executive Officer of CCBA, expressed confidence in Namibia’s future, describing the investment as a testament to the company’s belief in the country’s growth potential. ‘This investment is a clear demonstration of our continued belief in the future of Namibia,’ he said.

Gupta outlined CCBA’s broader goals, noting that the company’s strategy is to become a ‘customer-centric, digitally enabled, growth-driven business’ while achieving ‘execution excellence.’ He added that the new production line is part of CCBA’s long-term vision to provide faster delivery and superior service, supported by efficient and sustainable operations.

The $50 million project underscores Coca-Cola’s ongoing commitment to expanding and modernising its African operations, with Namibia playing a pivotal role. By investing in cutting-edge technology, skills development, and sustainable practices, Coca-Cola Beverages Africa is not only strengthening its position in the market but also supporting local communities and economies.

This investment marks a significant step forward in Coca-Cola’s journey to enhance efficiency and build a robust, skilled workforce in Africa, while meeting increasing regional demand.
