Defence HQ debunks rumours of Acting Army Chief appointment

…warns against calls for military coup

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has firmly dismissed rumors suggesting the appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS), clarifying that no such decision has been made within the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN). This response follows reports circulating in certain media outlets speculating on a temporary replacement for the COAS.

In an official statement, the DHQ confirmed that the current Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, is on his scheduled 2024 annual leave and is in good health.

The DHQ emphasized that the AFN remains professionally managed, with all service chiefs continuing to perform their duties as outlined by the Nigerian Constitution. Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is carrying out routine briefings for the COAS in line with standard military protocols.

The DHQ strongly urged media organizations to avoid spreading unfounded rumors and to verify information with appropriate authorities before releasing reports to the public. The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) had spoken to Lieutenant General Lagbaja shortly before the press release, reaffirming that the COAS will resume his duties after completing his leave.

In a stern warning, the DHQ addressed individuals advocating for a military takeover, which recently gained attention through a viral video.

The statement declared that such calls are considered treasonable under Nigerian law. The AFN reiterated its unwavering loyalty to the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and its commitment to upholding the nation’s democratic values.

The military leadership highlighted the relative peace and stability currently being experienced in Nigeria, crediting President Tinubu’s support and the dedication of the AFN in safeguarding the country’s integrity. The DHQ also reassured the public that the armed forces and other relevant security agencies have been mandated to take decisive action against any individuals or groups promoting unconstitutional changes.

The CDS expressed appreciation to Nigerians for their continued support and prayers, reiterating confidence in the AFN’s ability to achieve its mission of protecting the nation.
