Former federal lawmaker from Kogi State, Senator Dino Melaye, has expressed deep concern over the state of the nation, urging Nigerians and leaders alike to act swiftly to prevent what he described as the “death of the country.”
Melaye, who represented Kogi West in the 8th National Assembly, said recent developments in the country point to a dangerous trajectory that could threaten Nigeria’s unity and stability.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the former senator lamented what he called a growing sense of lawlessness and disregard for democratic values. He referenced the ongoing rumours of a military coup, the reported threat by former U.S. President Donald Trump to “invade Nigeria,” and what he described as “arbitrary and egocentric amendments” to the nation’s laws as worrying signs.
“The situation in Nigeria is becoming increasingly alarming. The rumoured coup, the alleged international threats, and the self-serving manner in which our laws are being amended all indicate that our democracy is under siege. We must not allow Nigeria to die,” Melaye warned.
He called on political leaders, civil society, and the international community to unite in defense of democracy, justice, and the rule of law, stressing that silence in the face of these developments would amount to complicity.
“Patriotism demands that we rise above political, ethnic, and religious divides to rescue this country from collapse. The time to act is now,” he said.
Melaye’s comments come amid heightened political tension and widespread public concern over governance, security, and economic hardship across the country.
