DSS Warns of Alleged Plot to Kidnap Schoolchildren in Edo, Security Agencies on High Alert

By Passman Akpos

Benin City, Edo State — Security agencies in Edo State have reportedly been placed on heightened alert following intelligence indicating an alleged plot by suspected bandits to abduct schoolchildren in parts of the state, particularly within the Edo North Senatorial District.

According to a classified security communication dated June 5, 2026, and attributed to the Edo State Command of the Department of State Services (DSS), intelligence operatives intercepted conversations between two suspected criminal elements identified as Bawa and Nuhu, who allegedly discussed plans to shift their focus from wealthy individuals to schoolchildren after previous kidnapping operations failed to generate the financial returns they expected.

The intelligence report claimed that the suspects believed the abduction of schoolchildren could attract wider public attention, prompt government intervention, and increase the likelihood of substantial ransom payments.

The report further disclosed that on June 4, 2026, a 25-year-old suspect identified as Emmanuel Momidu was apprehended after allegedly being observed conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School in Makeke Community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

In response to the threat assessment, security agencies have reportedly advised the immediate strengthening of security measures around schools and educational institutions across the state, with particular attention on communities considered vulnerable.

Recommended measures include increased deployment of security personnel, enhanced collaboration between security agencies, local vigilante groups, hunters, and community leaders, as well as intensified patrols and surveillance operations around schools and rural communities.

The development comes amid growing concerns over the safety of students across Nigeria following a series of high-profile school abductions recorded in different parts of the country in recent years.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation that any planned attack has been carried out. However, security authorities are urging vigilance among school administrators, parents, community leaders, and residents to help prevent any potential security breach.

Citizens have also been encouraged to promptly report suspicious movements or individuals around schools and educational facilities to relevant security agencies.

The situation remains under close monitoring as security operatives intensify efforts to prevent any threat to students and educational institutions in Edo State.
