Enugu: Man Alleges Brutal Daylight Attack by Nsukka Neighborhood Watch Operatives

A chilling account of a violent daytime assault has sparked outrage in Enugu State, after Mr. Chijinkem Ugwuanyi alleged that he was attacked, stabbed, and nearly killed on Friday afternoon by men he identified as operatives of the Nsukka Local Government neighborhood watch, led by its Chief Security Officer (CSO).
According to Ugwuanyi’s statement, the incident occurred shortly after he left a meeting with a friend, the CEO of Trillion Technology. He said he drove to Umeano Filling Station near Beach Junction to refuel, where the attack allegedly unfolded in full public view.
Ugwuanyi recounted that as he stepped out to pay with his ATM card, a man blocked his car door and asked if he recognized him. Before he could respond, he claimed that about six men surrounded his vehicle, forcibly opened the door, and identified themselves as members of the Nsukka Local Government security outfit.
“They said they were sent because I have been ‘attacking’ Engr. Jude Asogwa Chinedu, and that by attacking him I was attacking all of them,” Ugwuanyi stated.
He alleged that the group immediately began punching and stabbing him, while brandishing pump-action guns, causing bystanders to flee the scene in fear. The assault reportedly continued until an unidentified man intervened, questioning why the group had not called the police or formally arrested him if he had committed an offense.
Ugwuanyi said the attackers eventually withdrew after the intervention.
Named Individuals
In his account, Ugwuanyi identified three of the alleged attackers:
1. Chibuzo Egbugo, identified as the CSO of Nsukka Local Government Area
2. Ejike Stephen Nwangwu, also known as Gwadas
3. Chizoba Ogbu, also known as Lupeng
He added that he could not identify the remaining individuals involved, including one who was allegedly recording the incident during the assault.
Call for Accountability
Ugwuanyi challenged the Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area to publicly deny the allegations if he had no knowledge of the incident or the individuals involved.
“If the chairman did not send them or is unaware of what happened, he should produce these men, because they openly claimed they work for him and are on the council’s payroll,” he said.
He further claimed that 48 hours before the incident, he had posted on Facebook warning that certain individuals had been “penciled down” for attack, allegedly to be led by the same CSO he named in his account.
Awaiting Official Response
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the Nsukka Local Government Chairman, the Enugu State Government, or the police regarding the allegations.
Ugwuanyi said he is awaiting action from the Enugu State Government as investigations and reactions continue to unfold.
The allegations, if confirmed, raise serious concerns about the conduct of local security outfits and the safety of citizens in Enugu State.
