The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to aligning Nigeria’s development agenda with global best practices for sustainable ocean governance.
Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, stated this on Wednesday in a statement signed by his Special Adviser, Dr Bolaji Akinola.
Oyetola emphasised that the ocean was an indispensable part of Nigeria’s national life and economy, given its vast coastal resources.
He noted that the resources played a critical role in maritime trade, transportation, food security, and climate resilience.
“We are committed to aligning Nigeria’s development agenda with global best practices for sustainable ocean governance.
“President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability and economic diversification,” he said.
The minister disclosed that he would represent President Bola Tinubu at the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), scheduled to take place from June 9 to 13 in Nice, France.
He described the high-level global event, bringing together world leaders, policymakers, scientists, and stakeholders, as timely and crucial in accelerating action toward ocean conservation and the sustainable use of marine resources.
Oyetola added that World Oceans Day, observed on June 8, further reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to global efforts aimed at tackling urgent challenges facing oceans and coastal ecosystems.
“Our presence at UNOC3 is a clear demonstration of this administration’s resolve to protect our marine ecosystems while unlocking the immense potential of the blue economy for the benefit of all Nigerians,” he said.
He noted that the Nigerian delegation would participate in high-level dialogues, expert panels, and bilateral meetings to strengthen international cooperation and attract investment in sustainable marine infrastructure, ocean science, and coastal resilience.
“We are also expected to showcase Nigeria’s recent reforms in marine protection, port modernisation, and artisanal fisheries development,” Oyetola added.
He said Nigeria’s active participation underscored its strategic role as a regional leader in marine governance, maritime innovation, and sustainable coastal development.
