Harvest Security Boosted: Soldiers Stop Farmland Destruction, Arrest Two in Makurdi

Troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS) have intensified security measures across farmlands in Benue State as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard farmers during the critical harvest season. Their renewed vigilance led to the arrest of two suspected criminal herders accused of trespassing and destroying crops on community farmlands in Makurdi.
The arrest occurred on 20 November 2025 during a routine patrol by OPWS troops deployed at Zongo Akiki. According to military sources, the suspects had allegedly led their cattle into cultivated farmlands belonging to local residents, resulting in significant damage to crops. The swift intervention of the troops prevented further destruction and a potential clash between the herders and farmers.
The two suspects are currently in custody as investigations continue, with assurances that appropriate legal action will follow.
Force Commander, Operation WHIRL STROKE, Major General Moses Gara, commended the troops for their professionalism and urged community members to avoid resorting to self-help when confronted with disputes. He stressed that retaliation or violence only escalates tensions and threatens peaceful coexistence.
Major General Gara also reminded herders to remain law-abiding, noting that acts of trespass or crop destruction constitute criminal behaviour and will not be tolerated. He reaffirmed OPWS’s commitment to protecting farmlands, securing rural communities, and ensuring an environment where legitimate economic activities can thrive.
