Former Imo State Governor Ikedi Ohakim has categorically denied rumours linking him to the next President-General position of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a leading Igbo socio-cultural organization.
Ohakim emphasized that he has no interest in pursuing the role and is currently focused on the burial of the late President-General, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu.
In a statement he personally signed, the ex-governor stated, “I have no knowledge of any plans to elect or appoint me as the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo. No individual or group has contacted me, neither have I expressed interest in the position.”
Ohakim’s response follows widespread reports speculating that certain factions were attempting to position him as the successor to Iwuanyanwu, who passed away recently.
The former governor expressed frustration at being inundated with calls for clarification as the reports circulated widely across media outlets.
“My attention has been drawn to a widely published media report linking me with a certain move in some quarters to install me as the next President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide,” Ohakim said. “Let me be clear: I urge those spreading this malicious and reckless disinformation to desist.”
Ohakim further urged the public to respect the memory of the late Iwuanyanwu, noting that this is a time for mourning, not politicking.
“Let us allow Ndigbo to mourn and reflect on the late Ahaejiagamba’s legacy, which brought peace and tranquillity to our organization and Ala Igbo as a whole,” he added.
The former governor reiterated his disinterest in the position, calling on individuals behind the misinformation to stop their actions.
