Internet Access Severely Disrupted in Cameroon Amid Post-Election Protests

By Passman Akpos

Yaoundé — Internet access in Cameroon has been significantly disrupted as protests continue across the country over alleged irregularities in this month’s presidential election, internet observatory NetBlocks reported on Thursday.

The disruptions, which began late Wednesday, have affected multiple regions including the capital Yaoundé, Douala, and several towns in the Anglophone regions, according to data from NetBlocks. The organization noted a sharp decline in national connectivity levels, suggesting either deliberate restrictions or technical interference with major service providers.

Opposition groups and civil society organizations have accused the government of attempting to silence dissent following the controversial vote, which saw incumbent President Paul Biya declared the winner amid widespread reports of fraud and intimidation. Protesters have taken to the streets demanding transparency and a recount, leading to clashes with security forces.

“This is a clear attempt to suppress communication and prevent citizens from sharing evidence of electoral misconduct,” said one opposition spokesperson, calling for international pressure on the government to restore access.

Cameroon’s Ministry of Communications has not issued a statement addressing the outages, though officials have previously defended temporary restrictions as measures to maintain public order during unrest.

The country has a history of internet shutdowns during politically sensitive periods. In 2017 and 2018, authorities cut access for weeks in the Anglophone regions amid protests demanding greater autonomy.

As of Thursday afternoon, connectivity remained intermittent, with social media platforms and messaging apps particularly affected.
